Iranian VP’s dinner with Mombasa Muslims

by BRIAN OTIENO

The Shias and the Sunnis, the two denominations in the Islamic world, dined together on Wednesday evening in a show of unity at the Aga Khan Jubilee Hall in Mombasa. Iranian Vice President Mohamed Reza Rahimi was particularly happy to see this show of unity. He pledged goodies for the Mombasa Muslims and residents including a hospital and a power plant.

But it would seem this was not enough pay for the unity show as the Muslims also requested a major water project to be initiated at the port city. The happy Rahimi gladly obliged. Supkem Coast chair Shariff Mohdhar Kitammy was particularly insistent on sharing technology, knowledge and expertise between Kenya and Iran. The show of unity was so important to Rahimi that he promised to share the experience he had in Mombasa with Muslims in Tanzania where he flew to after the dinner.

Shariff Taha Al-Haddad, the head of the sheikhs at the Coast, human rights activist Hassan Omar, Kenya Muslims National Advisory Council chairman Sheikh Juma Ngao and other Muslim leaders at the Coast were present.
