Poet Daagh Dehelvi’s ghazal sung by Alka Nigam

by ASGHAR VASANWALA

Following is Poet Daagh Dehelvi’s Ghazal sung by Alka Nigam. It was telecast on Zee TV’s Jashn-e-Baharan program. I was mesmerized so much that I spent hours copying, writing it in three languages, and translating it English. Unfortunately, the Jashn-e-Baharan show didn’t succeed because of very low viewership.

For her glimpse, I moved heaven and earth
Even then, she accused me so much that even God shrieked “Oh God” “Oh God”

Medics say, “Take medicine”; friends advise, “Say prayers”
Rivals counsel, “Beg her”; what not fury I have earned

Reaching God is easy; bewitching her is tough
Oh my comrade, those who don’t trust my words, ask them to please and bring her to me

Hurrah to delivery of his words; Poet talented like “Dagh” is found nowhere
First, he makes us cry then turns cry into such glee that our eyes flood with tears of joy
