The lasting legacy of George Jackson

BAR

40 years ago, within a few weeks of each other, George Jackson was assassinated in a California prison, while in New York inmates in Attica Prison bucked and staged a brief uprising, at the end of which dozens of prisoners and guards were murdered by authorities. These events were public markers of the most potent possible movement for reform of the prison state: the politicization of prisoners themselves. Next week BAR will have an in-depth article on the historic Attica uprising. Here is the Freedom Archives tribute to George Jackson.
