Hazards: Nipple piercings add to risk of abscesses

The abscesses — pus-filled infections surrounded by swollen, inflamed tissue under the areola — can develop a month to seven years after a nipple is pierced. They recur frequently, are difficult to treat and often require surgery.

Though individual cases have been reported, the new study, published in The Journal of the American College of Surgeons, is the first to document the risk associated with nipple piercings, said the lead author, Dr. Vinod Gollapalli, a breast surgeon at the University of Iowa.
