Independence … for whom?

by B. R. GOWANI

Liberty, Freedom, Independence
everybody wants
most do not get

When the country is freed from the shackles
either through revolt or arrangement
a segment of society benefits

To end the British colonial rule in India
the subjects chanted:
“Buy Indian
Now or Never
Do or Die”

The Sun began rapidly setting
on the British Empire
thus began its disintegration
India became free
but it also became two parts
Now the people in the eastern wing
of the newly created Pakistan
faced yet another colonialistic injustice
from the rulers of West Pakistan
and the subjects chanted:
“Autonomy
Separate currency
Our own paramilitary force”

The bloodsuckers had one problem
between two wings was India
a thousand miles long terrain
They tried their best
also created rivers of blood
but Allah was with the impure Muslims and infidel Hindus
A country was born: Bangladesh was the name

White Sahibs are gone
so are the Pak Sahibs
and many of us are still homeless
and added to this, no security exists
we have to stay awake at night
otherwise the gangs kidnap our children

Now, who should we get independent from?
Bangla Sahibs?

Are we ever going to get independence
from insecurity, fear, hunger, sickness, illiteracy, violence?
