Mexican singer Chavela Vargas dies

Well-known Mexican singer Chavela Vargas has died at the age of 93. Mexicans will pay homage to her tomorrow at the country’s most important theatre, the Palace of Fine Arts in Mexico City.

Chavela Vargas, who was born in Costa Rica, was not only a passionate singer. She also had a colourful personality. During her adolescence, she moved to Mexico, where she made her name as a singer and became part of the international artistic world. For many years, she carried a gun, which everyone could see, under her belt. She also spoke her mind and did not hide her relationships with other women. She was friends with famous painters such as Pablo Picasso and Diego Riviera, and she reportedly even had a romantic affair with the latter’s wife, Frida Khalo.
