Big brother “Unique Identification Authority of India” (letter to newspapers)

by MUKUL DUBE

Several months ago, someone came to record my details for the National Population Register. Two days ago she came again and said that I should go to a certain place today or earlier to have biometric data recorded. She gave me a piece of paper which said that this was “mandatory” in view of such-and-such Act and so-and-so Rules.

Today, after I had had photographs taken of my face, irises and finger-tips, I was given a paper called an “Acknowledgement/Resident Copy”. This bore at its top the logo of AADHAAR and the words “Unique Identification Authority of India”. There is no trace of “National Population Register”, the outfit to which I thought I was going.

Does *everyone* now work for Nandan Nilekani? What is the need for false pretences, and is this business not against the law?
