JAMES WARLICK: Even allowing for the fact that being US ambassador is a high-profile job, Warlick was seldom out of the news, encouraging the Government’s steps against organised crime, inspecting Roman ruins, being a patron of the arts in a country sadly lacking such and even appearing on the hit television drama Stuklen Dom – playing James Warlick, US ambassador, and delivering his lines in Bulgarian. Warlick, the real one, had a public tangle with former interior minister Roumen Petkov about the embassy’s refusal to grant Petkov a visa – an alleged criminal investigation was mentioned – and had the job of helping to keep bilateral relations on track, WikiLeaks notwithstanding. Space does not permit description of all of the ambassador’s activities, but he is set to be a newsmaker for years to come.
