One of millions of Pakistani farmers who fled when the river burst its banks this summer, he returned home to find the water had stolen his harvest, drowned his fields and damaged the walls of his wattle-and-daub hut.
Still haunted by the exodus, Shazia, Mr Mala’s six-year-old daughter, keeps asking Rosa, his wife, whether the deluge will strike again.
