MALE: Maldives Judge Aisha Shujune Mohamed was elected to the UN Subcommittee on the Prevention of Torture (SPT). According to Foreign Ministry, 36 out of 55 countries at the committee voted in favour of Judge Shujune on Thursday’s ’s election at the UN.
The 20-person subcommittee is mandated to work with governments around the world to establish preventative mechanisms so that no individual can be subjected to torture or other cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment. The committee also tours the world conducting unannounced visits to prisons and other places of detention, to ensure that procedures and safeguards are in place to prevent the mistreatment of detainees.
