It was a case of literally adding insult to injury. College professor TJ Joseph, whose hand was chopped by Popular Front of India activists for blasphemy, now finds himself without a job after the Newman College, Thodupuzha, sacked him on 2 September. Political parties in Kerala, except the ruling CPM, are quite apprehensive about the sacking. Many leaders admitted privately that the punishment was “too harsh”, but nobody wants to spark yet another controversy. “We don’t want to flare up the issue,” says Pradesh Congress Committee chief Ramesh Chennithala.
