Dooda (No) Desert Rock (an appeal)

Stop the proposed Desert Rock Energy Project and all coal-burning power plants!

“For us, warriors are not what you think of as warriors. The warrior is not someone who fights, because no one has the right to take another’s life. The warrior, for us, is one who sacrifices himself for the good of others. His task is to take care of the elderly, the defenseless, those who can not provide for themselves, and above all, the children, the future of humanity.” —Sitting Bull

Philippines: Shamefully rich, clan has 35 houses, fleet of wheels

Until their detention, the principal suspects in the murder of Neneng and at least 57 others on November 23, 2009 lived in mansions in the country’s third poorest province, in neighboring cities, and even in Metro Manila.

They traveled with a retinue of heavily armed escorts in a convoy of black SUVs, flew business class, and paid the equivalent of at least two business-class tickets for the handling fees of their bodyguards’ guns flown on board (and several thousands of pesos more for their bodyguards’ tickets).

Each of their purchase, including those of multimillion-peso lots and luxury vehicles, was reportedly paid for in cold cash.

Latin America mostly at odds with US on Israeli Raid

by ALEXANDER MAIN

It is interesting to compare the US administration’s position on this tragic event with the positions expressed by its Latin American neighbors. In the past, Latin America has been generally friendlier to Israel than most developing regions of the world, and countries of the hemisphere considered to be solidly within the orbit of U.S. influence — for instance most of Central America — have been more reluctant to criticize Israel’s policies in the occupied territories of the West Bank and Gaza. In this case, though, the vast majority of Latin American reactions to the Israeli raid are fundamentally at odds with the U.S. position.

Flexible learning helps girls education in Bangladesh

by AASHA MEHREEN AMIN

Dhaka: In Bangladesh, family poverty and poor quality state education forces millions of children out of primary school. Girls in particular lose out as they are often the first to be called on to get a job or help their parents at home. But a new project of flexible learning centres is hoping to change this as Aasha Mehreen Amin found when she visited two centres run by the Dhaka Ahsania Mission.

A maths class is in full swing inside a Child Learning Centre (CLC) in a slum area of Sheorapara, Dhaka City. There are four tables where students, aged eight to twelve, sit immersed in their work. Jannatul (which means ‘heavenly’ in Arabic) is a round-faced, wide-eyed twelve year-old girl wearing a threadbare shalwar kameez.

Los Angeles: Massive layoff at Homeboy Industries

UPRISING RADIO

Homeboy Industries, the acclaimed institution that has worked to transform the lives of gang members in East Los Angeles for more than two decades, was forced into massive layoffs last week. The organization founded by Boyle Heights Jesuit Priest Father Gregory Boyle to combat gang violence through job placement has fallen short of maintaining its operating budget and as a result three hundred employees, including senior staff and administrators, found themselves suddenly out of work. The independent non-profit has been adversely affected by the long-standing economic recession as private donations and less local government funding has come at a time when unemployment has increased demand for its services.
